Sudan: Dozens of Eritrean Mutineers Killed Says Army Deserted

Shire — An Eritrean soldier who recently fled to Ethiopia has alleged that many of the dissident soldiers who in January laid siege at the ministry of information building in the capital Asmara have been killed.
Over 100 Eritrean dissident soldiers on January 21, 2013 stormed and took control of the ministry of information in Asmara and called for political reform and a return to the country's 1997 constitution.
The day-long mutiny ended after Special Forces loyal to President Isaias Afeorki surrounded the building and the mutineers agreed to release hostages and to peacefully return to their base.
The Eritrean army deserter who refused to be named for fear of reprisal against his relatives back in Asmera, said most of the mutineers were arrested days after their failed mutineer.

Ethiopia opposition stage anti-government demo

Addis Ababa (AFP) –  A leading Ethiopian opposition group gathered Sunday to protest against the country's anti-terrorism legislation, the head of the group said.
???We want the government to abrogate the law and to release all political and prisoners of conscience immediately,??? Negasso Gidada, the leader of the opposition Unity for Democratic Justice (UDJ), told AFP.
Several opposition members and journalists, including dissident blogger Eskinder Nega, have been jailed under the 2009 legislation.

Ethiopian housemaid commits suicide

An Ethiopian housemaid committed suicide at the women’s ward of the Abyar Ali Penitentiary in Madinah on Friday.
The domestic worker had been in prison since the end of August, a local daily reported Saturday.
“The 23-year-old inmate was found hanging by her head scarf at about 8 a.m. She was immediately taken down and rushed to the nearby Meeqat Hospital, but the doctors there declared her dead on arrival,” said a source at the provincial prison directorate.
The woman, who arrived in the Kingdom as a housemaid, was sent to prison on charges of stabbing her female employer.

Battling brain drain: Training doctors in Ethiopia

Rain drain is so severe in Ethiopia that the nation's health minister has complained there are more Ethiopian doctors in Chicago than in his own country.
 The good news is that the East African nation has one of the world's fastest-growing economies and is recovering from the nightmare decades of civil war and famine. Tackling the health care crisis is high on the priority list of the government, which has opened 13 new medical schools in the last two years. But training the doctors is still a huge challenge.
One physician who is playing a key role in Ethiopia's bold medical initiative is Senait Fisseha, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan. She's leading a U-M effort to develop a postgraduate training program for doctors of obstetrics and gynecology that is fast-becoming a national model for Ethiopia.
Fisseha said that U-M has learned from its work in other African nations—especially Ghana—that one of the best ways to retain medical talent is to offer doctors training and other opportunities to advance their careers.
"People don't want to leave their country if they have the option to stay there. Nobody wants to be a second-class citizen somewhere else," Fisseha said.

Ethiopian maid on final exit escapes at airport

An Ethiopian maid managed to escape from King Abdulaziz International Airport a few hours before her scheduled flight departed for her final exit.
The maid’s sponsor, Saad Allah Al-Zahrani, said the maid had arrived a few months ago upon his request.
“She refused to work and demanded that she go back to her country despite the family’s attempts to persuade her to stay,” he added.
Al-Zahrani bought her a return ticket. “I personally took her to the airport and admitted her to the passport department after getting the boarding ticket. I could not get inside to stamp the passport in compliance with the regulations, so I just made sure that she was standing in the queue and left the airport. I was later surprised to receive a telephone call from the airport telling me that she could not be found anywhere on the airport premises and that the flight had left without her on board.”
A security source said the maid remains under the responsibility of her sponsor if she did not stamp her passport. He advised citizens to be sure that workers on their sponsorship go past the passport counter before leaving the airport premises.
“In Al-Zahrani’s case, he should submit a report to security bodies stating that his maid has escaped so that his sponsorship is removed from our systems,” said the source.
