Ethiopia: Govt Bans Travel Abroad for Employment
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the travel ban is aimed at curbing what it calls "the rising tide of abuse and exploitation" of migrants from the country.
It says the ban will remain until issues surrounding employment of Ethiopians abroad are addressed.
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians travel overseas each year in search of work. Rights groups say a majority who leave the country are females seeking domestic work in the Middle East.
Some end up being subjected to emotional and physical abuse as well as poor working conditions. Earlier this year, video surfaced reportedly showing an Ethiopian maid being abused in Lebanon. She later committed suicide.
Other Ethiopian migrants have died at sea, traveling on unsafe smuggling boats destined for Yemen or Italy.
The foreign affairs ministry says the government has suspended the licenses of foreign employment agencies as part of the new restrictions.

The aircraft builder and Ethiopian are being tight-lipped about the exact approach, for instance whether the carbon composite aircraft will be patched on the tarmac at Heathrow.
A second option would be to make the aircraft temporarily flyable, so it could be moved to an overhaul center, or to Boeing, for a more complete rebuild that would replace the entire damaged fuselage section.
“We don’t have any new information to share,” said Boeing spokesman Doug Alder in an email. “We’ll advise once everything is finalized on the approach we’ll be taking on the repair.”

Ethiopia: A Message of Attention
All over the world, a government in power is required to pay attention and make adjustments for every economic, social and political aspect of the nation under its very rule. No different could Ethiopia be.
Ethiopia, as country, has a very long history, even if a large proportion of it is arguable. The society evolved through multifaceted ups and downs. It is only in the last 23 years that the economic system experienced a free-market spirit with its main opportunity of competition that in turn led to wastage of resources.

Meles the Good + Meles the Bad = Meles the Controversial
By Tesfu Telahoun Part One
In the last few years, I have come to realize that I’m a really lousy judge of character.
Take for instance, my first impressions of the late Hugo Chavez, president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. I thought then, ‘Here is a true statesman, a man of the people. One whose sole interest is to serve to the best of his capacity in whatever way would be best for the nation.
Meles the Good+Meles the Bad=Meles the Controversial-Part Two- Mellow Meles
The musings of a nosey layman on the late Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia-enigmatic leader of some and stern ruler over many others.
In ‘Idealist Meles’, the first section of this three-part series published last week, I maintained that the life and times of the late Meles Zenawi can be categorized into three distinct but not necessarily exclusive ‘phases’.
Accordingly, I identified these phases in descending order as: Idealist Meles-early sixties to late eighties, Mellow Meles-early nineties to May 2005 and Bitter Meles-from June 2005 to 2013.
‘Idealist Meles’ was a generalized treatment of the radical and idealistic

Battling brain drain: Training doctors in Ethiopia
The good news is that the East African nation has one of the world's fastest-growing economies and is recovering from the nightmare decades of civil war and famine. Tackling the health care crisis is high on the priority list of the government, which has opened 13 new medical schools in the last two years. But training the doctors is still a huge challenge.
One physician who is playing a key role in Ethiopia's bold medical initiative is Senait Fisseha, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Michigan. She's leading a U-M effort to develop a postgraduate training program for doctors of obstetrics and gynecology that is fast-becoming a national model for Ethiopia.
Fisseha said that U-M has learned from its work in other African nations—especially Ghana—that one of the best ways to retain medical talent is to offer doctors training and other opportunities to advance their careers.
"People don't want to leave their country if they have the option to stay there. Nobody wants to be a second-class citizen somewhere else," Fisseha said.
Ethiopian maid on final exit escapes at airport
The maid’s sponsor, Saad Allah Al-Zahrani, said the maid had arrived a few months ago upon his request.
“She refused to work and demanded that she go back to her country despite the family’s attempts to persuade her to stay,” he added.
Al-Zahrani bought her a return ticket. “I personally took her to the airport and admitted her to the passport department after getting the boarding ticket. I could not get inside to stamp the passport in compliance with the regulations, so I just made sure that she was standing in the queue and left the airport. I was later surprised to receive a telephone call from the airport telling me that she could not be found anywhere on the airport premises and that the flight had left without her on board.”
A security source said the maid remains under the responsibility of her sponsor if she did not stamp her passport. He advised citizens to be sure that workers on their sponsorship go past the passport counter before leaving the airport premises.
“In Al-Zahrani’s case, he should submit a report to security bodies stating that his maid has escaped so that his sponsorship is removed from our systems,” said the source.
